Standard Print Dimensions

Listed here are the standard dimensions used in print.

Photo labs usually rely on sixes such as 5x7, 8x6 and 10x8. These print sizes will actually crop the edges off of an image. 35mm film sixes are wider than the paper when printed full size.

Personally I don't tend to crop images much which allows for a wider print to be made from an image. Due to this my prints are made closer to A4 and A5 (wider paper). If printing to 10 x 8 for example, I often still place the whole image within the paper, this gives more of a border around the image.

The other system I use is a 6x6, square format Hasselblad camera. Due to the square film format I often compose images to be displayed as squares. Most people find the shape refreshingly different to the more popular film formats. In this case I will print to custom sizes or fit the image within the requested paper size. I hope all this makes sense!
